Your water pressure is off, and your utility bills are astronomical…what’s a homeowner to do?

One easy solution: Clean your aerator!

What is an Aerator?

The aerator is the little mesh screen you’ve likely noticed inside your faucet. Aerators are designed to reduce the amount of water leaving your faucet while also increasing the perceived pressure of the running water. Aerators are a great accessory for any home aiming to be energy and/or water efficient. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that installing aerators in every faucet in your home could save you up to 700 gallons of water every year!

How does an aerator work?

Aerators reduce the flow rate of water coming from the faucet. How? The mesh screen forces the water to flow in smaller streams instead of all at once, the way a garden hose operates.

Think of your showerhead — every little hole creates a smaller stream of water that allows you to regulate how much water you’re getting and at what speed. Aerators do the same thing on a much smaller scale (and without the customizability). Unfortunately, an aerator can’t do its job properly if hard water deposits block off some of these streams.

How to Clean Your Aerator

Follow these three simple steps to clean your aerator and get your water pressure back up to speed:

  1. Remove the aerator – Typically, you can do this by hand, but if you need to use pliers, make sure to wrap the fixture in a rag to prevent scratches.
  2. Rinse the screen – Run both sides of the aerator under running water. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub stubborn buildup.
  3. Soak it in vinegar – Stubborn buildup may need to be soaked in a bowl of white vinegar overnight. Repeat steps one and two in the morning to fully clean the aerator.

After you’ve followed all these steps, simply reassemble your faucet, and you’re ready to go!
